Mashed Turnips and Potatoes

    While the roast is cooking prepare this recipe, an adaptation of a Welsh dish called punchnap. Keep it warm over a double boiler or re-heat in the
    microwave.

    1 pound white turnips, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
    2 pounds all purpose potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
    1 cup buttermilk
    3 tablespoons unsalted butter or margarine
    3/4 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

    Put the turnips and potatoes in separate medium saucepans with cold salted water to cover. Bring both to a boil over high heat, reduce the heat to
    moderate and simmer until the potatoes and turnips are tender, about 10 to 15 minutes. Drain potatoes and turnips and add them to a large mixing
    bowl. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, over low heat, warm buttermilk, butter, salt and nutmeg. Pour the buttermilk mixture over the turnips and
    potatoes and whip with mixer at low speed, increasing to high, until smooth; about 3 minutes. Serves 6.
