Phylliscooks:
Delicious dairy-free desserts
Phyllis Steinberg
Phyllis Steinberg is a food and travel writer in Florida. Her food columns appear in several papers in South Florida, including the Sun-Sentinel, Coral Springs Forum, Boca Raton Times, Delray Times and Boynton Beach Times.
Doris Schechter was born in Vienna. Forced to flee Austria for Italy, she and her family eventually settled in the United States. In 1982 she opened My Most Favorite Dessert Company in Great Neck, New York, and in 1986 moved the bakery to Manhattan, where it is now combined with a restaurant.
As its loyal fans can tell you, there is just a great place to go for great dairy-free desserts in New York City: Doris Schechter's My Most Favorite Dessert Company.
Constantly filled with patrons looking for dairy-free cakes as well as sweet -lovers indulging in one of their treats, this popular bakery has proven that dairy-free desserts can be more delicious than their butter or milk-filled counterparts.
Doris has recently published a cookbook with more than 90 recipes for cakes, tortes, sweet breads, pies and cookies that are milk-free. The book called My Most Favorite Dessert Company Cookbook, published by HarperCollins, is a must for cooks who are allergic to milk. It is also good for kosher cooks who want to serve desserts that do not contain milk after they have served a meat meal.
Below are a few of my favorite recipes from the book:
